The Space Shuttle Endeavour, designated OV-105, was one of NASA’s iconic orbiters. It was built as a replacement for the Challenger, which tragically disintegrated during launch in 1986. Endeavour’s maiden voyage was in 1992, and it went on to have a successful career, completing 25 missions, including missions to the International Space Station (ISS), servicing the Hubble Space Telescope, and conducting vital scientific research.

In 2012, after the conclusion of the Space Shuttle program, NASA needed to transport the retired Endeavour from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida to its final destination at the California Science Center in Los Angeles. The challenge was how to safely and dramatically transport a massive space shuttle across the country.

NASA’s solution was as audacious as it was captivating: they decided to piggyback the Endeavour on top of a specially modified Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA). This highly modified jumbo jet, known as the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, was originally built to transport shuttle orbiters for various purposes, including ferrying them back to the Kennedy Space Center after landings at alternative sites.

On September 19, 2012, millions of people across the United States gathered to witness the historic flight. The Boeing 747, with the Endeavour securely mounted atop its fuselage, took off from the Kennedy Space Center. The sight of a space shuttle cruising gracefully through the skies on the back of a jumbo jet was nothing short of mesmerizing.

The aircraft made several stops along the way, including flyovers of NASA facilities, historic landmarks, and cities such as Houston, Texas, and Tucson, Arizona. Each stop allowed people to get a closer look at this incredible duo, and the flyovers were a testament to the deep connection between space exploration and the American people.

After a three-day, cross-country journey, the Endeavour arrived safely at the California Science Center in Los Angeles on October 12, 2012. The shuttle was then carefully and meticulously removed from the Boeing 747, ready to take its place as a centerpiece in the museum.
